The Rangers came off an opening day 8-0 loss to the Athletics in Oakland. You can see the box score here.

ONE SHADE OF GRAY.

Domination.

It’s just the first game. It’s not the way you want to christen a season. But when you face a starter like Sonny Gray, a dominating young right-hander who has everything working, there is not much you can do about it. He shut out the Rangers twice last season.

A hit by pitch and a dropped fly ball in the outfield was all the Rangers were able to squeeze out of the first seven innings. No hits. Not much even hit all that hard.

Ryan Rua led off the eighth with a single, and the no-hitter was over. A batter later a screaming line drive doubled him off. And the Rangers’ threat ended.

Really, the only highlight other than Rua wrecking the no-hitter was the job Anthony Bass did in his two innings of work in relief of Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo, who wasn’t sharp at all. Bass gave up a hit and walked a batter, but he also struck out three, stranding the runner he inhereted in the bottom of the fifth, and pitched a scoreless sixth. Bass had moments of brilliance in the San Diego rotation a couple of seasons ago. All the Rangers need from him coming out of the bullpen are moments.

There is really nothing else to write about. Oakland won 8-0 on the back of an opening day, eight inning, one-hit masterpiece by Sonny Gray with offense scattered up and down their entirely new lineup.

Forget this one and move onto the next one. Enjoy game two tonight at 9:05 DFW time.

If the Rangers win today, they move to .500.
