Freefalling. 285 comments

With thirteen more days until pitchers and catcher report, here is a re-post of an article from the morning after I saw Tom Petty in concert. I got a lot of comments about this one being particularly lame. So I am re-posting it now so those who disliked it the first time can enjoy it all over again. I’m heading out of town. Enjoy:

There’s an old stoner myth about the Wizard Of Oz and the Pink Floyd album “Dark Side Of The Moon.”

It is said if you start the album on the third lion roar in the opening credits, the picture of the movie and the music of the album form an uncanny synchronicity, changing together at dramatic moments, themes aligning, stories happening in unison.

Like, supposedly, when the Scarecrow dances on the lawn, Pink Floyd sings, “the lunatic is on the grass.” When Dorothy and the Scarecrow start their way down the yellow brick road, Pink Floyd sings, “got to keep the loonies on the path.” When the Scarecrow starts signing about if he only had a brain, “Brain Damage” plays.

Brain damage could be used to describe the person who “discovered this.” Or just high as a kite.

This is the most foolish thing anyone’s ever heard, right? How could a random music selection possibly have anything to do with a random movie?

I thought that. Until last night.

That’s when I went to see Tom Petty in concert. The moment he walked out on stage and began playing, they played the Rangers 2014 highlight reel on the backdrop behind him on stage. The symmetry blew my mind.

And I wasn’t even stoned.

The concert started right as the opening credits rolled on the 2014 Texas Rangers Highlight tape. I was amazed at how they lined up perfectly:
