Hot stove league: Free agent center fielders. 17 comments

On Texas’s 40-man roster are six potential center fielders: Jurickson Profar, Delino DeShields, Joey Gallo, Scott Heineman, Drew Robinson, and Carlos Tocci.

So, with six choices, the Rangers won’t need to spend $400 million on Bryce Harper.

Harper is perhaps the most polarizing free agent in a long time. He is only 26, so, theoretically, his best years are still ahead of him. He has won an MVP award, so, theoretically, he is an elite player. But he had so many other less than stellar seasons that the allure of the one MVP season is tempting. And his agent, Scott Boras, is going full bore on breaking the bank and making Harper the highest paid athlete in professional sports history.

Luckily the Rangers have Carlos Tocci.

Here are the available free agent centerfielders. One Idiot Owner is going to play drunken sailor at shore leave and throw stupid money at Harper. The rest should be reasonable.

Bryce Harper
Adam Jones
A.J. Pollack
Billy Hamilton
Rajai Davis

Matt Szczur
Shane Robinson
Paulo Orlando
Eric Young, Jr.
Brandon Barnes

Butta Starling
Austin Jackson
Emilio Bonifacio
Ben Revere
Jordan Schafer

Billy Hamilton. Period. End of sentence.

Yep…..my primary concern with BH is the OBA…..he would not leadoff….bat 9th IMO

Only a temp stopgap for 2 yrs until one of the ML CFs can make it to the Bigs. At least we’d be wowed by real D and some spectacular plays even though the batting #s would be mediocre.

Yeah…made several posts about him yesterday……Must admit, I know nothing of Heineman….but 10 mill for 2 yrs is cheap nowadays,,,,

The words—Luckily the Rangers have Carlos Tocci— make me want to cry. Nothing against Carlos Tocci….I just want so much better. ☹️

Hamilton brings ++defense, SB’s and a .630 career OPS. Stole 34 bags and was caught 10 times. 28-years-old.

Tocci had 77 total AAA at bats. Not ready for MLB, but they had to keep Tocci on the active roster due to rule 5 status. Needs to be in Nashville this year.

Heineman brings +defense .295 .355 .429 .784 with 424 AB’s in AAA. One error in 357 CF innings last year. 26 years old. Plays all 3 OF positions.

I know everyone has soured on DD but defense was much improved in 2018. DD gets caught stealing much less frequently than Hamilton and Hamilton will have to learn the AL pitchers moves. DD on a bad year will out hit Hamilton. 20 steals, caught 4 times. DD will not play better defense than Hamilton.

Would Hamilton help the OF this year and next on a 2-year deal, hell yes. Is the price tag 10mil for those 2 years? I don’t know what he will go for, but I would like to see that money spent on pitching. Hamilton has zero trade value at this point and the Rangers ain’t going anywhere this year.

I would give Heineman the chance to win the CF spot in ST. Let DD, Tocci and Heineman battle it out.

JD stands pat here with 3 in the fold already during another rebuilding year.

I agree on Heineman. As much as I like Hamilton, why not see what we have?

      • calntom

I think they might add someone to eat ST innings as they are playing 2 games each day. Or maybe they just use the A farm guys for that?

      Good analysis.

Here is a story on the next Japanese phenom pitcher to come to the states. Knowing Jon Daniels’s diligence on Japanese pitching, it’s not surprising to read that the Rangers were among teams scouting him:

Bama whines about playing OU in Arlington…so game will be in Miami

    • calntom

      Sounds fair

      • JacobMcCandles

To Bama……further from Norman to Miami than backwoods Bama to Arlington
