Hot stove league: Free agent designated hitters. 37 comments

Never before has this team been so set in the designated hitter role. But when you have a general manager who thinks he is playing fantatsy baseball, where defense doesn’t matter, that happens.

Choo’s, Calhoun’s, Profar’s, and Mazara’s best position is DH. And before Odor’s stunning reversal of fortune, he was the poster boy for players who should DH, except for that one nagging nit. He couldn’t hit either.

But if you were a team looking for a DH, there are five available. The top four are pretty good.

Nelson Cruz
Evan Gattis
Logan Morrison
Matt Davidson
Robbie Grossman

(Players in bold are former Rangers.)

After weeding through all the position player FA’s, it doesn’t seem that the Rangers have any glaring needs that can’t be fulfilled from within to field the 2019 team.
Pitching could still be an issue. Starting arms and BP are both a tad thin. Lol

    From MLB Rumors:
Free agent southpaw Derek Holland is drawing multi-year interest, per Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). It’s all but impossible to gauge his true market at this stage, with some bigger dominoes still to fall, but it stands to reason that he’d make some degree of sense for a fairly broad group of clubs. At the outset of this year’s hot stove market, we guessed Holland could warrant a two-year, $15MM commitment. Though there are obvious limits to his value at 32 years of age, Holland did finally break out of a multi-year malaise with a strong 2018 campaign in which he contributed 171 1/3 frames and worked to a 3.57 ERA — his first full season of sub-4.00 ball since way back in 2013

Tom, you and I are having the same thoughts. The only position that the Rangers don’t have covered is an important one–CF. Also, the other day I wrote on this website about the possibility of the Rangers and Holland reuniting. For that money, I think it would be a very good idea. I do not think that the Rangers are obligated to have another terrible year. Holland should have nothing but good feelings toward Texas. Not that he’ll give them a dollar break, but he certainly ought to be willing to return.

You would have to add a ton to compete…….have to be patient

        • Nathan Whitten

Unfortunately, patience is not one of my very few attributes. I want it yesterday. A TON? Surely it’s not that bad.

          • JacobMcCandles

Well…..If you added two above avg SPs, a good CF like Pollack and a big bat for DH….you could make a run for a Wild card…..Maybe!! The Stros,As and Halos will all still be better…..do catch a break with the Ms folding.

          • calntom

That would be a start, then a near complete rebuild on the pen. Pen needs a lot of work or patiently rebuild it but I could see JD trading pieces of it at any time in 2019 if the right player(s) in return were available .

      • dearmidol

Nathan, as it is right now, I don’t know how the Ranger can dramatically improve on their 67-win season. In fact, nothing suggests they will even get that many wins. But it’s early December, so a lot can happen between now and April.

        • Nathan Whitten

          Too much, it appears.

      • calntom

Rangers have 3 CF’s on the 40 man roster including a rookie that they will look at, Heineman(sp?), DD and Tocci. Tocci should be at Nashville most of the year. JD might sign another to come in to compete.
At this point, CF money should be saved and spent on pitching this year or next year.
Given the trades they made last year, they are destined for a rebuild year with a lot of young guys getting playing time this coming year to develop at the ML level.

        • JacobMcCandles

My MO would be 1 and 2 yr contracts for stop gaps and any contract of length needs to be on young pitching

          • calntom

Young pitching had a nice ring to it. Where is it found to be signed?

          • JacobMcCandles

            Tiz the question

  • JacobMcCandles

Gattis might come reasonable. Grossman is not a DH.

Good morning everyone! Here are the pics for today. Refresh. Also, today is National Cookie Day. At participating McDonalds, you can get a free cookie with a $1.00 purchase. You might have to have the McDonalds ap to get it, but I’m not sure. If you buy coffee from McDonalds, it is worth getting the ap because they give you free coffees every once in a while https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/78e06275a0ec81a0014423fa8e8c24649215903873721db5d227b2eecafb250e.png https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/19af80794ceed551ba806c5391b01790f1eaea54af335a2a429b6c9d9790c892.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d1f1db875ccaffe952c29e1f2a0d69ee7bcb0e382c73e112291e2e3281166b60.jpg . Have a great day!

I believe Corbin will be the next big FA pitcher mistake…a good pitcher that had a great year….I would not spend the major $$$ on him.

    • calntom

      Agreed. Big risk long term.

    • dearmidol

MLB.com is reporting he just signed a six-year deal with Washington.

      • JacobMcCandles

Some Orgs just don’t get it…LOL

        • calntom

Yanks would only go 5 at 100mil

The Nats have cash out the whazoo

          • JacobMcCandles

Most under performing team in MLB the last 5 yrs IMO…biggest failure was Davey Johnson’s last yr when Borass strong armed them into shutting down Strasberg

Looks like tickets go on sale the 13th

    • dearmidol

I bought tickets last week to see Mark Knopfler in Houston in September.

      • JacobMcCandles

Hope he has improved…when I saw him on a Dire Straights tour, they were terrible.. : (

  • JacobMcCandles

    Astros signing RC
A mistake we made, letting him go

    • calntom

Won’t miss Chirinos with what the Rangers are trying to accomplish over the next couple of years. Just hope Mathis will be able to squat 80 games a year over the next 2 campaigns. Does not matter if he hits anything.
Kind of tells you what the Stros thought of McCann.

      • dearmidol

Rangers just need to set up a screen behind the batter to stop the pitch.

      • JacobMcCandles

RC was cheap though cal….he wasn’t the long term plan and neither is Mathis but he made good filler…bad yr this last one but rated an avg catcher yrs before

      • elkaba

I expect the major contribution they want from Mathis isn’t really behind the dish, but in the pre-game meetings and pitching planning sessions. We have two problems when it comes to starting pitching. One, obviously, is not enough decent starters. But we also have an issue with whatever pitching we do have- we don’t really make the most of what we have. I think that’s where Mathis comes in. We don’t need a bat at catcher right now- we’re probably going to lose more games than we win next year no matter who catches. We need someone who can teach calling a good game, someone who can read what the game is asking the pitcher to do and someone who can get the most out of the pitchers we have, whoever they may be. It wouldn’t hurt the younger catchers to be learning that either. And those are all things we can’t get from RC, no matter what kind of year he has at the plate.

        • calntom

Good points Elk on planning, calling the game, framing. As of last year, Mathis can still toss it to 2nd at the league average.
He is a great teacher. Knowing how to execute and being able to do it and teach it are two totally different animals. Mathis can do both. He can relate to the whole staff. It is that intangible the Rangers are after.

          • JacobMcCandles

Better point IMO is why could they not keep both?

          • calntom

I guess it might all come down to how much do you have to spend on pitchin’ through 2021.

  • calntom

Since they signed Mathis, does that increase the chance of signing Perez back on a 1 year deal to eat some innings? The Rangers might trade arms again at the break. That is where Gallardo came in last year.

    • JacobMcCandles

Think they are done with Perez

  • possumrld

The ideal DH needs to be a constant power threat like a 25 to 30 home run a year guy. But also he should be able to hit for some kind of respectable batting average, like at least in the .250 – ish. range. Of course the higher the BA and the OBP, the merrier.
But it is hard to believe how the Rangers have been so fraught with futility of late, in a position where “all a guy has to do” is hit.
