Hot stove league: Free agent third basemen. 56 comments

The Rangers have an opening at third. Perhaps you heard of the guy who used to occupy that spot. His name was Adrian Beltre. He retired. He is having a press conference today to thank everyone. Chances are you will never hear about him again. Until five years when he is voted into the Hall of Fame.

So they don’t just have an opening. They have a hole. A big, gaping hole. And they have three potential candidates to fill it.

One, Juriskson Profar, who is about as unreliable at defense as Beltre was reliable. Two, Isiah Kiner-Falafa, who can play the position admirably, but doesn’t have the power that position traditionally calls for. Three, Joey Gallo, who doesn’t like playing third.

No matter who ends up winning the bulk of the playing time at the hot corner, they are going to commit the unpardonable sin of not being Adrian Beltre.

Here are the available free agent third basemen. There is more depth in a Hollywood starlet.

Manny Machado
Mike Moustakas
Trevor Plouffe
Will Middlebrooks
Mark Reynolds

Ryan Flaherty
Phillip Evans
Miguel Gomez
Chase d’Arnaud
Chris Nelson

Andy LaRoach
Conor Gillaspie

(Players in bold are former Rangers.)

You are on a roll. One day FA SS after Machado are as thin as Motel 6 TP. Today, FA 3B after the same man possess the same depth as a Hollywood starlet. I heard of a thesaurus, I would ask for the name of the document that compiles these witty analogies, except that I think they come from your head. Compile them. Think of a snazzy name. Sell them and become a wealthy writers’ assistant, while at the same time you will become a wealthy and famous writer who got his start writing for an audience who appreciates your work, talent and wit. . First, thanks for the kind words. It’s just the stupid stuff that comes out of my head.

I too think Gallo’s best use is at third but he has said he doesn’t like playing there. It will be interesting to see if the team does what’s best for the team of what’s best for the player.

      • elkaba

What’s best for both player and team may be he gets traded for a pitcher.

        • Nathan Whitten

It would be nice, but I don’t think we’d even scare equal value on our end.

          • JacobMcCandles

Yep and Gallos value is higher staying

        • dearmidol

That would be best of all, elk.

          • elkaba

I know someone who’s actually met and interacted with Gallo. Their assessment is he doesn’t come off as the brightest bulb in the pack, so I can see the possibility that the idea of converting him to a more useful asset, either offensively or defensively, might be a bit of wishful thinking and possibly more work than it’s worth. More likely outcome would be he is what he is.

As things stand now, he may be a fan draw, but he’s not much of a team player asset. Getting a hit one out of 5 trips to the plate or playing where you’re needed most isn’t asking too much, occasional monster home runs notwithstanding. So if he can be fixed and soon, by all means we should keep him. If not, we should cut out losses, clear the roster spot and take whatever we can get.

          • JacobMcCandles

He is good at defense at multiple positions….smart on the base paths and has a talent at the plate that is the hardest to find in BB…….Power!! Even with the drastic below avg, his OPS is above avg….if he can raise his BA to .230 he would be a top line asset. Have to go down the path with him a while longer.

          • elkaba

I expect we will do that. I’d just like to see a short leash on this, not years and years waiting for him to become what we need him to be.

          • JacobMcCandles

Agree….but as long as we are going to stink, might as well roll the dice

      • Nathan Whitten

I don’t think it’s stupid. If it is, then I like stupid stuff and I do the same thing. It just pops out of my head. That’s how it works with you.

Gallo has always been a 3B. It seemed sudden when he announced that he did not like it. I don’t like players backing out like that. It certainly would not set a good example to cater to his whims. He could change his mind. I say have a nice talk with him about making sacrifices for the team. He seems OK. I think he’ll come around.

    • JacobMcCandles

Spot on…..i too think this lineup is good enough, especially with improvement from the young players. 3b is Gallos

      • calntom

You can never count on sophomore year improvement.

        • JacobMcCandles

Nope…but you can wish…lol….Pulling out some nice Catfish out of Tawakoni

          • JacobMcCandles

You know more than I do…but best catfishing for me is at night.. Why? Using minnows and catching one every 30 minutes

  • GoRangers23

The Beltre retirement ceremony is on now, in case you forgot.

  • GoRangers23

    😭😭😭

  • GoRangers23

    That was typical Adrian. 😂

    • JacobMcCandles

Dang, I missed it…hope they run it again

  • JacobMcCandles

Certainly don’t expect too change anyone’s perception on Kinsler due to pouty face or lack of hustle, or pop ups….I was always enamored with his immense talent. Also, I leaned towards his teammates comments…all of which were fantastic. I bring this up as he was at Beltres press conference. Classy move IMO

I have been looking for a video of Adrian’s press conference, but I cannot find one that is complete. I have only found parts of it. If anyone knows where to find it I would appreciate the info. 🙂

    • dearmidol

I looked for it as well. No luck yet.

    From the PC stage…

Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving is now racist cuz the one black character is sitting by himself on one side of the table.
Rudolph is now bad cuz it encourages bullying
And Children timeouts are taboo cuz thats mentally deflating…

Where do these people come up with this garbage? More hate in the PCers than the people they target… Sorry, I just don’t get it

    • dearmidol

As my daughter once said, stupid stupidity.

      • JacobMcCandles

          • GoRangers23

Are you kidding me? This stuff is ridiculous! I’m tired of people who get offended telling me what I can and can’t listen to or see. At Walt Disney World they redid an entire iconic scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride because the pirate auctioneer, who is selling off the woman of the town to other pirates, turns to a big, big towns woman and says, “shift yer cargo dearie, show em your larboard side.” Disney got continuous complaints from large people who were offended, and they got continuous complaints from woman who were offended that the horrible pirates were auctioning off woman. The ride has been around since 1967. Apparently people want to see nice pirates at Disney, not a real depiction of a pirate. I don’t know why so many people try so hard to change history. Now, there is a woman pirate auctioneer who is selling off the goods of the townspeople. She is now auctioning off the large woman’s chickens. Needless to say , it is really stupid!

          • JacobMcCandles

We have spent over a million dollars removing Confederate statues and stuff…you don’t have to agree or embrace that segment of our society. But is very dangerous to rewrite History

          • JacobMcCandles

Haha…..PC has done far more damage than good

          • GoRangers23

I just listened to that song while reading the lyrics. First of all, she doesn’t really seem like she wants to leave all that much, in my opinion. Lo. Second of all, he isn’t forcing her to stay. He’s trying to talk her into it. There’s a big difference. It’s the same song and dance going on between men and woman since the beginning of time. As a Christian I disagree with the behavior, but there’s nothing criminal about it.

    • von_todwin

You are incredibly susceptible to outrage journalism. I’m looking at an Independent article about this Charlie Brown thing, and their evidence of the “PC stage,” as you call it, is two Twitter users. There are over 7 billion people in the world. You can find examples of opinions to prove your preconceived notion anywhere. The problem is when you then attach that to a movement or philosophy or ethical statement in the larger sense. “Two people on Twitter say Charlie Brown is racist, so the entire notion of political correctness [which, boiled down, means human decency/respect] must be bunk!”

And, because I’m sick of this tired line, you need to learn what “hate” means. Because no, Jake, saying that having the one black kid sit alone is racist isn’t “hate.” It might be wrong, but it’s not hate.

      • possumrld

Von, the whole social network is talking about this absurd Charlie Brown thing. Maybe it started out as just “two twitter’s”. But like King Solomon said about the tongue, “What great a fire a little matter kindles”.
So I don’t get your smack down of Jake. As far as I can tell all he mentioned is fact. There is a lot of “hate” behind these types of things. Because the idea is to foment division and hate. So take your blinders off.
Maybe it is you who needs to learn the definition of hate.

        • JacobMcCandles

          Yep,,,and Von is entit

          • von_todwin

So you’re advocating the exact thing the Peanuts critics are doing?

        • von_todwin

That is, literally, the entire point. You can find a couple examples of people who will say almost anything. Doesn’t mean they’re right, and doesn’t mean they’re representative of ANY kind of movement (like PC). The ones Jake should be mad at are the “journalists” turning a couple Twitter comments INTO a story by publishing it, because that’s what kindles a “little matter” into a “fire.” I’ve looked at four articles (from “reputable” sites) and not a single one has quoted someone off-Twitter saying anything. Also, I tend to browse Twitter regularly across the day, and I haven’t even seen one person post something not in response to the articles about it.

And it’s not hate. Critique is not hate.

          So, basically:
          1. A person has a surprising opinion.
          2. Twitter offers that person a way to express it and a chance for others to see it.
          3. “Journalism” uses it as evidence of something (good, bad, whatever)
          4. “Journalism”‘s much larger readership is now exposed to the idea
          5. Idea grows.

Blame Fox News, the Blaze, etc., but until you have examples of actual significant amounts of people feeling this way, or action being undertaken in response to it, it’s a non-story, not a great fire but a tiny spark falling on some wet wood.

          • JacobMcCandles

I would underline your lack of mentioning CNN that makes a loud statement to your views…..personally I cannot stand CNN,FOX and most news institutions as you are right….much of journalism today is to instigate, especially CNN

          • von_todwin

My lack of mentioning CNN was because I was talking about a specific example, one that I haven’t personally seen a CNN article about, but which would certainly extend to them if so. NYT and WaPo both have people that do the same, less regularly. This is a pan-media statement.

          • JacobMcCandles

CNN is the worst…as they consistently break the cardinal journalistic rule…making themselves the story, not the story itself….CNN has lost more lawsuits than everyone else combined

          • possumrld

I agree with most of what you say, Tod. But no matter how big or small a matter we judge this story to be, I do think these kinds of racially divisive comments are intended to stir controversy and foment hate.
But yes, the journalists are regularly to be blamed.
Thank you for your measured and well thought out response.

          • JacobMcCandles

            Amen

      • JacobMcCandles

IMO you need to explore PC and what it has done to our society…..it has created an environment of less talk, and set us back years.

    • possumrld

“Liberal” is just a different way to spell “hypocrite”.

If I remember correctly, Gallo was 3B for some time down on the farm. In 2017 he was blocked by Beltre and only got time at 3B if Beltre was on the DL or at DH. Gallo started 66 games at 3B in 2017. To get playing time he started 52 games at 1B and another 17 in LF.
Gallo never played 3B in 2018. They never really needed him at 3B with Beltre, Profar and IKF.

What Gallo said in mid-may 2018:
“I hate third base,” Gallo said Wednesday. “It’s my least favorite position on the field. As I’ve played other positions, I’ve realized how bad it was for my body. But if they want me to play [third base], I’ll say ‘OK, I’ll play it.’ I don’t have to like it.”

Gallo will play 3B for the Rangers if they need him there. He obvisously would rather hang out in LF or around the 1B bag if he had his druthers rather than the hot corner. I don’t see a problem with making your thoughts known to management.

Now, if he can just get than BA up about 30 points…….

    Rangers non tender Bush..

  • possumrld

I was looking at the Rangers website, earlier today thinking, beyond Adrian’s outstanding play and his team leadership, all will sorely miss his endless fun loving antics and that mischievous smile!
And on a non baseball matter, How ’bout dem Cowboys!

    • Rowdy Yates

They really surprised me vs the Saints. Not a Cowboy fan, mostly because of Jerry, but do like a bunch of their players so liked the win. And it made the Wild Card races a lot more interesting.

      • possumrld

Jerry is Jerry. No team can help who their owner is. But I totally understand, because I strongly disliked the Atlanta Braves for many years when Ted Turner was the owner.
