All we hear about is how bad the Rangers are this season against left-handed pitching. Which got me to wondering, exactly how bad are the Rangers against lefties?

First, let’s look at the benchmarks. Last season, the top batters versus left handed pitchers were:

Jose Altuve, .420
Nori Aoki, .376
Victor Martinez, .371
David Wright, .367
Raja Davis, .356

And, last season, the top home run hitters vs left handers were:

Josh Donaldson, 14
Victor Martinez, 12
Justin Upton, 11
David Ortiz, 11

By comparison, here is how the Rangers batters hit against left handed pitchers (double the home run total to compare to last season’s totals) :

DeShields, .294, 0 HR (.294, 0 HR)
Fielder, .281, 6 HR (.267, 79 HR)
Andrus, .266, 2 HR (.278, 8 HR)
Moreland, .260, 2 HR (.233, 9 HR)
Beltre, .259, 3 HR (.289, 98 HR)
Martin, .235, 2 HR (.235, 5 HR)
Choo, .233, 2 HR (.234, 19 HR)
Chirinos, .224, 3 HR (.228, 9 HR)
Hamilton, .222, 0 HR (.271, 53 HR)
Odor, .208, 1 HR (.235, 3 HR)
Rua, .138, 2 HR (.267, 2 HR)

Okay, so maybe this year is just a fluke, right? Well, here are how they hit against lefties in their careers:

DeShields, .294, 0 HR
Beltre, . 289, 98 HR
Andrus, .278, 8 HR
Hamilton, .271, 53 HR
Fielder, 267, 79 HR
Rua, .267, 2 HR
Odor, .235, 3 HR
Martin, .235, 5 HR
Choo, .234, 19 HR
Moreland, .233, 9 HR
Chirinos, .228, 9 HR

Looking at these career numbers, you have to ask yourself, why was anyone surprised by this?

What was the front office thinking when they created this roster?

Why were they expecting anything different?

As a Rangers fan, this is depressing because the front office did nothing to address this offensive deficiency.
