Seventeen Texas Rangers have worn the uniform number 29. No other player will ever wear that number again.
Adrian Beltre will be the fourth Ranger to have his number retired. He will join Nolan Ryan, 34; Johnny Oates, 26; and Pudge Rodriguez, 7. In addition, every Major League team has retired number 42 in Jackie Robinson’s honor.
In June, in a ceremony that will most likely be the only reason to pay attention to the Texas Rangers at that time of the season, the club will retire uniform number 29 for Beltre.
While this season is supposed to be about the future of the Rangers, in reality it’s about the past. That’s really all this team has to market at this point.
Since this is the last year of the Ballpark, there will probably be a lot of celebrating the past.
Adrian Beltre deserves every celebration he can get.
