Two good ones. 64 comments

It’s the Yankees and Astros.

The MVP vote in the American League will come down to Jose Altuve and Aaron Judge. The championship of the American League will come down to Altuve’s team and Judge’s team.

The irony is so thick you need something that cuts thick irony to cut through it.

This match-up is no surprise. There were three elite teams in the American League. These are two of them.

The top two teams in the AL in runs scored this year were the Astros then the Yankees. The Astros were first in hits, the Yankees third. The Yankees were first in home runs, the Astros second. The Astros were first in RBIs, the Yankees second. The Astros were first in average, the Yankees third. The Astros were first in on-base percentage, the Yankees third.

On the pitching side, the Yankees were third in ERA, the Astros fifth. The Yankees gave up the second fewest home runs, the Astros the third fewest.

So, yes, these are very evenly matched teams.

The Yankees have 27 world championships, the Astros 0.

A “7 foot” tall guy verses a “5 foot” tall guy.
    The Yankees = 27 Championships.
    The Astros = Zero Championships.
David and Goliath in a baseball format.
    Go Astros!

    • dearmidol

I sure hope the Astros can figure out a way to do it.

  • FlappingGums

I’ve seen more Yankees games this year than Astros games because the Astros games are blanked out of our area. So, I knew the Astros are a good team from highlights and reading about them this year. I knew the Yankees are good this year from watching them. I look forward to tonight’s game! This is going to be a wild series! πŸ˜€

    • FlappingGums

Oh – I thought it was Yankees and Astros tonight. I’ll watch tonight’s game but I’m really looking forward to the Yankees – Astros game tomorrow.

  • GoRangers23

Thanks for the comparison, Midol. The next several games should be interesting! I’m not an Astros fan, but I’m SURELY not a Yankees fan. It looks like I’ll be on board the Astros side this time.

How close have your predictions been so far? Have you gotten them all right?

    • WhoKnowscs

I’m rooting for NL at this point. any of the 3 over AL.

      • GoRangers23

I have an issue with the Yankees, so I have to root for the Astros. That’s just the way it is. πŸ˜„ However, who knows who I will be rooting for when it all comes down to the last two teams. If the Yankees beat the Astros, I will be all for the NL team. I do like the Cubs. It should be interesting. I’m really not 100 percent in on any team. The only team I truly back is the Rangers, and we all know they didn’t make it. So I’m a little wishy washy about the rest. πŸ˜„

        • WhoKnowscs

I despise the Yankees because of fans who tout the 27 World Series wins every time they bring them up in conversation. Interesting note, only 7 of those wins after 1962 – they have had 11 new teams formed since and if you count after 1960 its 9 wins and 14 new teams and 4 of those 7/9 wins came 96-2000 when they outspent just about every other team(1 year the Orioles were number 1 by about 1 mil). In 2005 they were the first team to break 200 mil payroll(2nd was 123.5 mil.) They only have 1 win after 2000.

I also can’t stand the way the Astros seemed to make up excuse after excuse for the rebuild, or when Luhnow couldn’t get a player to come play for them because the club was near the bottom. Spend money or don’t complain.

Don’t be fiscal pariahs when you don’t have to be, but don’t spend in excess like the Yankees.

So while I want the Astros just to end the Yankees, I then root for any of the 3 NL teams, even the Dodgers who admittedly go against my spend in excess bit.

          • elkaba

I’m pulling first for my state (Astros) then for my AL league team (Astros or, holding nose, NY.)

          • FlappingGums

I too am always for the AL over the NL.

          • GoRangers23

It’s funny how we all go in different directions as soon as the Rangers are out of it. πŸ˜„

    • GoRangers23

I went back and looked. So far, Midol, you are batting 100. Good job! I really hope that you are wrong about the next one though!

      • dearmidol

Did I pick LA over Arizona? I can’t remember.

        • GoRangers23

Oh, I didn’t look at the NL teams. Brain fart!

    • dearmidol

I predicted Yankees over Indians, Astros over Boston.

I have to go back and look in the NL. I think it was Arizona over LA. But I had Washington over Chicago.

So AL right. NL, not so right so far.

    • elkaba

Time to upgrade what counts as depth for this team.

      • dearmidol

        It’s not deep depth.

        • elkaba

There’s an oxymoron in there somewhere. πŸ™‚

    • WhoKnowscs

So the guy that’s was recovering from injury is already going through another surgery? JD . . . Pass! Don’t Gamble!

  • JacobMcCandles

Not much left to add, article is very encompassing….always think the odd part is the 2 3 2 format, really does not favor the home team. But the Stros got the matchup that was better for them….so get your popcorn ready.

    • dearmidol

I would like to see them eliminate some of the travel days. You don’t have that in the regular season. And that’s what creates these long parade of bullpens. The off days allow them to be rested.

If in the DS they went 2 games, 2 games with no travel, then an off day for the showdown Game 5 it would be better.

If in the CS and World Series, it went 2 game, three games, no off day between, then an off day, then the final two, it would be better. And finish when it’s not 25 degrees outside.

      • JacobMcCandles

Travel is why they did it…it makes sense but the question I am proposing is who gets the advantage. Yanks win 1 and then get 3 at home

        • dearmidol

Right but they rarely take a day off for travel in the regular season. Why do they have to do it for the off season?

  • GoRangers23
    • TD30

Lol that’s funny stuff. I like the press statement about the retirement of his backpack.

    • elkaba

I still want Jared as our TV play by play guy. πŸ™

      • GoRangers23

        Me too!

      • GoRangers23

He has a personality and sense of humor. He would be a HUGE improvement. He also has a lot of knowledge.

  • Curt Hays

Hahahaha, I hope you’re at the game tonight. Double header for the championship.

    • dearmidol

Yes, I will be there. Let’s hope we’re on our A game.

  • grumpyderfsmagic8ball

Hope gallo and odor are watching

    • dearmidol

Odor said he was not going to change his approach. So he is probably not watching.

      • Rowdy Yates

Guess you can’t teach a new dog old tricks.

  • dearmidol

    There goes the game.

  • Rowdy Yates

Looks like Rowdy could be rooting for the Astros after all. ‘Cause he sure as hell isn’t gonna root for the Damn Yankees or the Bryce Harper Nationals.

    • elkaba

Welcome to the dark side. πŸ™‚

  • Rod Harper

Anyone watching the Cubs-Nationals game right now?

    • elkaba

      Yes

  • Rod Harper

Werth misjudged an easy fly ball not long ago! Might that be a nail in the coffin to the Nationals’ postseason run?

  • elkaba

Announcers sound like they’re really pulling for the Nats.

    • Rowdy Yates

Yes … they’re almost making me miss Braymond and Nits.

  • Rod Harper

    Now things are getting interesting!

  • Rod Harper

Crisis averted for the time being in the Cubs’ favor!

  • Rowdy Yates

It may not be good baseball but it’s fun to watch all these runs for both teams.

    • elkaba

Bullpens seem to be struggling. Looks familiar…

      • Rowdy Yates

Yeah I don’t understand how the Rangers missed signing these pitchers. They’d fit right in.

  • Rowdy Yates

Looks like a 5 hour game and gotta get up and leave for airport at 3:45 this morning for wife to catch her flight to FL to help out with her ancient parents and I don’t get a real hoot about either of these team though I’d much rather see the Cubbies win than the Nationals. So, off to bed. Will find out tomorrow who won.

  • Gregor_S

Lots of baserunners and scoring threats in this game. And lots of singles and doubles. This is what a baseball game should be, despite the sloppy defense. It hasn’t been a home run derby.

  • JacobMcCandles

And instant replay controls the fininsh…..ouch

  • GoRangers23

Oh good. I’m just so thankful I made it just in time to see Leonys. 😩

    • Gregor_S

I don’t see how any team with Leonys on the roster can possibly win a playoff series.

      • GoRangers23

        Me either.

      • JacobMcCandles

        Don’t remember Leoyns Mantle?

      • elkaba

LA has to kill them. Has to happen. No way Leonys gets to go to the World Series.

  • GoRangers23

    Yay Cubs!

  • Rod Harper

That Jayson Werth play where he misjudged the easy fly ball eventually was the difference maker in tonight’s game!

  • GoRangers23

Does anyone know why the announcers kept saying “poopy pants” in the show after the game?
