A workhorse.

Nathan Eovaldi picks up a W over Cleveland.

Nathan Eovaldi has been a free-agent signings that worked. Quite often teams throw big money at pitchers and they don’t work out.

Jacob deGrom is a prime example. Look at the Diamondbacks signing of Jordan Montgomery. He has pitched so poorly for them, he has recently been demoted to the bullpen.

But Eovaldi has been as advertised. A workhorse. Maybe not a true ace, a Cy Young-like pitcher, but he’s been a godsend to the Rangers.

He helped them win their first World Series championship last year. This year he’s battled nagging injuries but always come back strong. Sure, he’s had his share of stinkers, giving up five or more runs in two of his last six starts. But those are oddities and not normal.

Yesterday, he grinded out six innings, allowing just three earned runs in six innings, which is a complete game by today’s standards, picking up a win.

He has an option for next year that he will almost certainly turn down to become a free agent for more money and more years. The Rangers, of course, can sign him to an extension. But the jury is still out whether this team is going to spend to keep get back to being a contending team.

Re-singing Eovaldi would be a good move.
