The Winter Meetings came and went, and the Rangers were quiet. They signed infielder Tyler Wade to a minor league deal and traded for Carter Baumler, who the Pirates had just selected in the Rule 5 Draft.
The loudest noise they made was insisting Corey Seager will not be traded. As Chris Young said, “The reality is, we are not motivated to move Corey Seager. We are trying to win a championship in 2026 and in order to do that, we need great players.”
Comparing the 2025 Dodgers, who did indeed win a championship, and even the 2025 Blue Jays, who almost won a championship, to the current Rangers roster, and it can be said confidently that the Rangers are miles away from having a championship calibre team. It’s encouraging to know that is the goal, though. But trying to win a championship while cutting salary on a team that hasn’t been to the playoff the past two years is like trying to win a marathon by hopping on one leg voluntarily.
Sure, you’re trying. But are you really?
The jury is still out. The Rangers still have a lot of work to do but there are still eighteen weeks until the season starts. That’s plenty of time to assemble a roster capable of competing. So, it’s way too early to panic or worry.
Panic and worry should be due March 26, when they open the season in Philadelphia.
