Well, that season was fun. We should do it again more often.

The Rangers won ninety-five games, second most in team history. What’s amazing about this team was that it was a total team concept. While there were standouts on offense, led by Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus, when you look at the American League leaders in offense, Rangers don’t show up a whole lot in the top ten.

It was a lot of guys contributing big, not one or two big guys contributing.

Interestingly, four of the nine starters down the stretch were not even on the Rangers’ twenty-five-man roster when the season started: Carlos Gomez, Nomar Mazara, Jonathan Lucroy, and Carlos Beltran.

The opening day outfield was Desmond in left, DeShields in center, Choo in right. DeShields played his way out of center. Choo ended up on the DL four times to give way to Mazara, who did a great job of keeping the position warm until Choo got back. It just took about five months rather than five weeks.

The infield held steady throughout the year. And what an infield it was. Beltre at third, Andrus at short, Odor at second, Moreland at first.

Prince Fielder started the season at DH. He ended the season out of baseball.

The Rangers tried a triumvirate of mediocre catchers including Robinson Chirinos, Bobby Wilson and Bryan Holaday. They hung in there for a while, but ran out of steam. After all, career .230 hitters only hit .290 for so long.

So when you look at the team offensively league-wise, nobody really stood out. But that is the sign of a well-balanced team.

When you leave it on the broad shoulders of one or two guys, they can be pitched around.

It’s pretty hard to pitch around nine guys.
