Every time Jacob deGrom takes the mound, he seems to get better. Last night was one of the more dominating pitching performances of his dominating pitching career.
He was perfect through six innings. Baltimore hitters were totally baffled. Through the first six innings they didn’t have anything that even resembled a hit.
It was good seeing another team be the Rangers for once.
In the seventh, deGrom walked two batters but still got out of it without a hit or a run scoring. So, when he took the mound in the eighth, Texas was up 7-0. He was in the mid-80s in his pitch count, and a no-hitter looked very much like it could happen. But three pitches into the at-bat, he gave up a leadoff single and walked off to a standing ovation from the tiny Baltimore crowd.
In the end, that was the only hit the Orioles would get. Combine that with the six no-hit inning Jacob Latz tossed at the Orioles hitters the night before, and there was a clear winning in the Battle of Most Disappointing Teams: the Baltimore Orioles.
With every start, Jacob deGrom adds to his Hall of Fame-worthy resumé, improving to 8-2 and lowering his ERA to 2.08. It’s just a shame the Rangers bats have acted like they, too, have been facing deGrom every game this year.
