Max Scherzer still has life in that arm. He’s forty-one. He’s been on two World Series champion teams. And he picked up a W for Toronto in last night’s 8-2 win over Seattle to even their Championship Series at two games apiece. (In the National League, the Dodgers are 3-0. It’s all over there but the crying.)
Mad Max pitched five-and-two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs before turning it over to his bullpen. There’s no doubt he’s going to be a Hall of Famer. But it’s surprising he’s still going. When he was with the Rangers, he was injured most of the time but managed to get in enough starts to make a difference in helping Texas make it to the post-season. He made eight regular season starts for Texas in ’23, and nine in ’24.
Toronto took a chance on him this year. He was on and off the I.L., but helped them win the division, and now he helped them tie the series against Seattle.
Scherzer showed he still has what it takes to win at the highest level, in the most important games. Maybe he has a few more years left in him.
