It looks like the Mets have that “thing” going on. Call it mojo or magic or whatever, but they are making baseball fun.
Monday, in the crucial hurricane-forced doubleheader in which they absolutely had to win a game, they scored six runs in the eighth to erase a 3-0 deficit. Then after watching the Braves snatch back the lead with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, they scored two in the ninth to win 8-7.
Down 4-3 in Game 1 of the Wild Card series, they rallied for five runs to win 8-5.
Then, last night, they authored the most improbable of comebacks.
Down 2-0 coming into the ninth inning, they had picked up only two hits the entire game, two singles. The rally started like most rallies do, with a leadoff walk. This, to Franciso Lindor, who had those two singles. Mark Vientos struck out. Then Brandon Nimmo poked a ball through the infield into right.
And free agent to be (wink-wink, nudge-nudge, Rangers) Pete Alonso stepped in. Doing his best Corey Seager impression, he crushed a home run to right and, in the process, crushed millions of Milwaukee Brewers hearts.
Piling on the Brewers misery, the Mets scored one more for good measure, won 4-2, and continued their magical run. They face the Philadelphia Phillies, who they went 6-7 against in the regular season.
You might not be a Mets fan, but if you’re a fan of baseball, you gotta love what they’re doing so far.
