Just six more weeks until we hear the three most glorious of words: Pitcher and catchers. Until then, we have to endure bitter cold, lesser sports, and more endless excuses from Jerry Jones.
The Rangers continued their offseason remaking of their bullpen by bringing back Chris Martin, who played for Texas in 2018 and part of 2019 before being dealt to Atlanta for Kolby Allard, a first round draft pick in 2014 by Atlanta who never panned out for them, or for the Rangers.
Martin had spent the two seasons prior to joining the Rangers pitching in Japan. In his nearly two-year stint with Texas, right-handed reliever was a solid setup man, posting a 3.84 ERA and an overall ERA+ of 130. He spent time with the Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, and most recently, Red Sox. His 2023 season in Boston earned him a Cy Young bid. He didn’t win but his 1.05 ERA and 434 ERA+ made him one of the top relievers in the game.
He enters the 2025 season at thirty-eight years old and is still pitching at the top of his game. He might slot into the eighth-inning set up role that thirty-nine-year-old David Robertson excelled at last year.
Martin’s not a closer, so the Rangers are still looking for someone to fill that slot. But Martin is a great addition to a bullpen that’s been rebuilt with Shawn Armstrong, Hoby Milner, Jacob Webb, Luis Curvelo, and Robert Garcia.
