You can romanticize about baseball only so much until people think you are a lunatic. Then, last night happens. And you realize no words can do it justice. And no amount of romanticizing will feel wrong.
There have been 119 World Series before this one. Guys named Babe Ruth and Willie Mays and Hank Aaron have played in a World Series. But a guy named Freddie Freeman one upped all of them. He became the first player ever to hit a walk off grand slam to secure a 6-3, tenth-inning victory after the Yankees had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the tenth.
The Dodgers paid a ton of money for the players at the top of their lineup. Just as the Rangers did for Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. Those are the guys you expect to come through for you.
And Freddie Freeman answered the call.
Game 1 was a dagger in the hearts of the New York Yankees. That was a game they had every right to expect to win after Jazz Chisholm stole second and then third, then scampered home on infield ground out.
But baseball has a beautiful way of playing itself out. And with two outs and the bases loaded, Freddie Freeman became a folk hero.
Whoever you are rooting for, baseball was the big winner. No sport is as adept at showcasing itself like that.
