The bullpen again.

Jon Gray’s ERA inched closer to 4.00 with another dismal start, giving up 3 runs in 4-plus innings of work.

This is how a bad team works.

One game it’s the offense that lets them down (in this case, many games).

When the offense works, it’s the rotation.

When the offense and the rotation work, it’s the defense. Or the bullpen.

Last night, it was the bullpen. And, to some extent, another Jon Gray start where he struggled. Unlike the previous starts, he didn’t allow an avalanche of runs. This one, he just piled up his pitch count.

Then it was time for a visit from the Rangers Philanthropic League, otherwise known as the bullpen. With the Rangers up 4-2, the gave up a run in the fifth. A the tying run in the sixth. And the two winning runs in the seventh.

As it always does, the Rangers offense went meekly in the last three innings. And the feel good good feelings the Rangers accumulated after their last two victories vanished in the night like a Dane Dunning fastball.
