There are certain times you realize it’s just not meant to be. The baseball gods have decided. This is not your year.
When Sam Haggerty and Wyatt Langford collided, dropped a sure out, and allowed the first batter of the sixth the end up at third, that was the moment you realized, it’s not supposed to be.
For the first time seemingly in months, the Rangers scored more than two runs. They had a 4-2 lead against the White Sox, who were off to their worst start in franchise history—a history that last year saw them have the worst season of any team in history—you had to think the Rangers had a chance at winning.
Then came The Moment. And just to make sure we got the message, it was delivered again loud and clear with Josh Jung’s error the next batter, and Marcus Semien’s failure to get an out on a double play ground ball from the next batter when he missed the tag and was late to first.
Before the inning was over, the White Sox had scored six runs, taking an 8-4 lead, making it impossible for the Rangers offense to catch up.
Rock bottom was reached.
