Baseball is weird.
Angels starter Reid Detmers came into last night’s game having compiled an ERA over 10.00 in his last four starts. The Rangers have the best offense in the American League.
Detmers shuts them out, throwing a no-hitter through seven innings.
The last time Reid Detmers pitched and Ryan Blakney was behind the plate calling balls and strikes was May 10, last year.
Reid Detmers throw a no-hitter that night.
The Rangers have been in first place most of the season, with an offense that piles up runs. They are off to the best start in franchise history, with 72 wins in their first 121 games.
They have yet, however, to win a game when trailing in the eighth or ninth inning.
So, down 2-0, when they got the first two runners on in the ninth, their statistical odds of winning were 0.00 percent. Stats don’t lie. The Rangers were unable to pull it out.
After finally breaking through with a hit, the Rangers had two on and one out in the eight. They couldn’t score. Their first two batters reached in the ninth. They couldn’t score.
Baseball is weird.
Being a Rangers fan this year is wonderfully frustrating.
