Winter shopping.

The Winter Meetings start Monday, and it’s anyone’s guess what the Rangers will do. They have so many holes to fill, and only a tiny spoon with which to dig.

In swapping out Marcus Semien for Brandon Nimmo, the Rangers offense has invproved a bit. But it had more than a bit to go. Basically, shopping at the dollar store, the Rangers need to upgrade at first, third, and catcher. They need to find a closer and a bullpen, and they need to find rotation arms.

The jury is still out on Chris Young’s ability to pull this off. Yes, he guided the Rangers to their championship in 2023. But he also was at the helm for this disappoint slides in ’24 and ’25. And, it was Chris Young who went shopping at the last trade deadline for a closer and a bat and came back with a starter and two setup men. Like going to the grocery store for steaks and potatoes and coming back with chips and beer.

If media reports are correct about the payroll constraints, the only way Young is going to find the wiggle room to do what needs to be done to get what they need is to rid itself of Corey Seager’s salary. Do that, though, and this team actually gets weaker on offense, which the opposite of where it needs to go.

Maybe he will surprise everyone. The Semien for Nimmo deal certainly was that. Does he have a few more of those up his sleeve?
