Gem. 171 comments

As good as it gets. Cole Hamels rose to the occasion, besting the Astros best in Justin Verlander, 1-0.

Someone call the jeweler, the Rangers pitching staff just cut a gem.

Cole Hamels and the Texas bullpen tossed a one-hitter at the World Champion Houston Astros, shutting them out 1-0 in a good old-fashioned pitching dual.

It was the Rangers first shutout of the year. And it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Justin Verlander has been super human since coming to the Astros. But last night, Cole Hamels went toe to toe with him. And came out ahead.

Even though in his last six starts Hamels was 0-3 with a 4.11 ERA, he hadn’t been pitching badly at all. He certainly solved the first-batter home run problems that plagued him his first three games.

Last night the key was Hamels’s curve ball, which manager Jeff Banister said was his best all season. It was masterful, keeping Astros hitters off stride. In fact, the only hit was an Evan Gattis bleeder through the infield to lead off the fifth.

In every 1-0 game there is a hard luck story as well. Verlander has faced the Rangers three times this season. He has given them just two earned runs. The Rangers have won two of those three games.

But the Rangers are on the good side of this because Gallo worked a walk in the seventh, after being down in the count, to loaded the bases with no outs against Verlander and knock him out of the game (thank you, pitch count baseball). Jurickson Profar hit a sac fly to score the lone run.

The Rangers bullpen made it hold up.

But the story was Hamels. Even though he hasn’t been winning games, that is deceiving in this era of six-innings-and-out baseball. Ever since his bad start in Toronto where he gave up five earned in 5.1 innings, he has given up two, four, two, one, two, and now zero earned runs. And he is routinely going six innings. The Rangers just aren’t scoring runs for him.

They didn’t last night, either. So he just made sure it didn’t matter.

Texas has won three out of the last four, and those three victories have been, by far and without question, the most enjoyable three games of this trying season. The first two because the offense rallied.

This one was a classic pitchers’ duel, ala Koufax-Gibson.

Most games like this this season have been the result of ineptitude of offense. This one was masterful pitching.

This was a baseball game.

Verlander was brilliant. Hamels was brillianter.

I liked it better when we started yesterday’s game 24-15. OK, it was a gaffe but I still liked it better.

    • dearmidol

I am the Rougned Odor of blog mistakes.

      • azrangerfan

Not hardly. I don’t think you have ever stuck out.

  • azrangerfan

Very good game. Enjoyed watching some good baseball.
All is now right with the world. Odor is back and things are clicking. Headed to the top!

  • elkaba

Beautiful game yesterday. Here’s hoping for another one!

  • Tony Howell

Now that’s how baseball used to be played. Great pitching beats good hitting. Gallo did go 0-3 but that walk was huge it set up the sac fly. Also looks like RC needs to go on the dL otherwise he may Set the SO record. By the way the record is 223 Mark Reynolds.

    • dearmidol

The Astros have all four infielders on the right side of the infield. There is absolutely nobody anywhere in the left side of the infield. While I get that Gallo is a power hitter and he likes hitting it over people’s heads, in a 0-0 or 1-0 game, his first priority is to get on base. I don’t care if there are no outs or two, a 100% chance of getting on base is much better than a 2% chance of hitting a home run. And, the fact it, if he bunts it right, chances are he will get a double.

      • Rowdy Yates

You just don’t ‘get’ modern baseball Kevin. 😉

        • WhoKnowscs

Apparently fans don’t either since they don’t want to watch it as much.

          • JacobMcCandles

Ranger fans are AL and cut there teeth on 10-9 games

          • Rowdy Yates

That’s why the winking smile after the post.

      • elkaba

LOL, that would involve situational hitting. That’s another Baseball 102 class that Banny and company haven’t gotten to yet.

        • JacobMcCandles

Can’t get to BB 102 if you can’t graduate 101

  • JacobMcCandles

Boys are playing better…..5-5 last 10 games. Actually watched the whole game start to finish…..it was a real gem

  • JacobMcCandles

Don’t think anything will come of it, but a addendum to the game. Rangers keep plunking Houston and like I said yesterday Houston kids are not much for retaliation…..I would suggest not hitting Gattis or McCann…two guys to stay away from.

  • dearmidol

Hate to say it, but this might be the Yankees year. They were down 6-2 to the Athletics in this game. Tied it 6-6. Chapman walked the first three batters in the top of the ninth. Got a strike out then a sac fly. But that was overturned on replay and it ended up being a double play, runner thrown out at home. So bases loaded nobody out on walks and no runs scored. Chances of them winning it in the bottom of the ninth: Dead lock certainty

    • JacobMcCandles

Yep IR blew another one…Yank announcers were laughing

    • JacobMcCandles

Never know, but don’t think the Yanks have the SPs to go the distance

  • TD30
    • FlappingGums

      Thank you, TD!! 😀

  • JacobMcCandles

I think this is the yr, to dump Choo…eat most of his salary and MAYBE get a prospect……Beltre’s obvious drop in power has diminishished his trade value…..but we have to see the big pic…..open the door for Gallo at 3B,Guzman at 1B and Calhoun in LF…….Hamels might bring a avg AAA pitching prospect, or a top line AA. Offense will be set as much as one could like. $$$ on pitching, pitching.pitching

    • grumpyderfsmagic8ball

      Whats your plan for IKF?

      • JacobMcCandles

        Bench

    • Gregor_S

If they could dump Choo that will open a spot at DH next year (assuming they put Calhoun in LF not at DH). So a pleasant scenario might be that they trade Beltre at the break for good pitching prospects, then resign him over the winter (when he’ll be a free agent) to mostly DH next year. And he could play some third if Gallo can’t handle it or Calhoun can’t handle LF and needs to DH with Gallo in LF.

      I can dream…

      • JacobMcCandles

As much as I would like to see him here….I would love for him to get a ring

        • Gregor_S

He could get a ring somewhere else this year then come back next year (probably not to get another ring unless JD really lucks out in getting pitching). Rangers will still need a veteran presence and there’s no better veteran presence than AB.

Song is about runaway kids……at the end of the original video that scrolled several dozen kids names,,,,,,based on this video couple a dozen kids were reunited with their families…..Power of music

  • JacobMcCandles

Here is your patience stat….when TX Forces opposing pitcher to throw 20 pitches their record is .600 last 3 yrs if less than 15 .400…Darvish r u listening…lo

    • dearmidol

      Is this per inning?

      • JacobMcCandles

        Sorry first inning

  • WhoKnowscs

I think Fister just threw about 4 pitches in the time it took Morton to throw one.

  • dearmidol

Astros are struggling at home. 10-10, batting .230.

    • JacobMcCandles

Morton’s curve ball is wicked tonight

      • dearmidol

        Yeah, that’s amazing.

    • WhoKnowscs

Rangers are 1 game over .500 on the road. But 7-16 at home.

      • JacobMcCandles

        That’s BB

  • JacobMcCandles

    Whewww

  • Gregor_S

Grieve saying Profar improving as he plays SS on an everyday basis, but I thought he did that in RR last year.

    • JacobMcCandles

      Grieve has dementia

      • Gregor_S

        No, that’s Raymond.

  • JacobMcCandles

Minor lge umpire behind the plate

  • Rollie Fingerbangers
  • dearmidol

Good to see Odor leading off.

    • WhoKnowscs

Much better than having him come up with some on with 1 to 2 outs.

      • dearmidol

To save the environment, he should just go up to the plate without a bat.

        • grumpyderfsmagic8ball

          Now that’s funny. 😂

        • WhoKnowscs

Why even go to the plate at all? Just call him out and move to the next guy

          • dearmidol

            Like the intentional walk.

          • WhoKnowscs

            The freebie out!

  • dearmidol

    There we go.

  • WhoKnowscs

    CONDORMAN!

  • dearmidol

Guzman seems to be a good hitter. He has been in every other level.

  • FlappingGums

    WOOHOO Goozy!!

    • dearmidol

      Love Goozy.

  • dearmidol

I am hoping the Rangers brain trust is staring to respect DeShields.

    • Gregor_S

Hope so, it’s only taken them 4 years. I worry that Ian Desmond may be available.

      • dearmidol

        Yikes.

  • GoRangers23

    YAY! Go Guzman and Delino!

  • WhoKnowscs

We need to see if we can convert Odor to a pitcher since he hits like one

    • dearmidol

      Or an usher.

      • WhoKnowscs

        Ticket taker?

      • GoRangers23

I like this idea better! 🙂

  • WhoKnowscs

Well, so much for the lead.

  • dearmidol

    Gattis? Really?

  • GoRangers23

    Well, he was almost out….

  • dearmidol

One run in twelve innings. Not bad.

  • GoRangers23

    Oh my.

  • dearmidol

    Gattis can hit.

  • dearmidol

    Game flying by.

  • GoRangers23

Let’s get some runs now Rangers!

  • Rowdy Yates

Hinch finger sniffin’ again. Another reason to dislike him … and the Astros.

    • JacobMcCandles

      Everyone hates the best

      • dearmidol

        Best is Francona.

        • JacobMcCandles

          Team……agree on Francona

  • GoRangers23

Judging from how that looked when he let the ball go, that looked like retaliation. I’m not saying that because it was them hitting us, I’m saying that because it looked like he threw it straight at Mazara’s legs. That didn’t curve at all . It went straight to his legs.

    • dearmidol

His control has been perfect. That was certainly on purpose.

      • GoRangers23

I guess that answers our question. Mazara wins the best player award. 😄

    • JacobMcCandles

Rangers lead MLB in Hit batters

      • Rowdy Yates

Cub lead MLB in HBP. Rangers lead AL.

        • JacobMcCandles

Nope TX HIT 30 St Louis second at 22

        • Rowdy Yates

You said “lead MLB in hit batters”. Being an English speaker I assumed that meant HBP (batters hit) not “hitting batters”.

          • JacobMcCandles

Sorry Will clarify for you going forward….figured you would look at the context

  • Rowdy Yates

Rangers came into tonight’s game with 396 Ks in 40 games and leading MLB in that stat. So, that’s an avg of 10 per game. Even more impressive is that means nearly 2 of every 5 outs they make are via strike out. And they’re working hard to maintain that lead with 12 Ks tonight in just 6 innings.

    • GoRangers23

I wasn’t aware that it was that bad. That’s sad.

      • FlappingGums

        It’s really rougb!

        • FlappingGums

          Rough

          • Rowdy Yates

I thought you were trying to say “it’s really Roughie”. Which would fit perfectly!

          • dearmidol

Think of how bad it would be if Rougie had been playing.

          • FlappingGums

            Ha! 😁

          • GoRangers23

            Ha!

  • FlappingGums

    Good DP!

  • dearmidol

The commercial for the World Cup made me wonder, who cares about the World Cup?

    • FlappingGums

      LoL!!😁

  • dearmidol

    What a mismatch.

  • dearmidol

Please pitch count us, Astros manager.

  • dearmidol

Morton is at 100 pitches. He needs to come out.

  • FlappingGums

    Good going Profar!

  • dearmidol

The season is up to Rougned. We are okay.

    • FlappingGums

      Ha!

  • WhoKnowscs

Have no Fear, Odor is here!

    • dearmidol

I am calling it. He’s due.

      • JacobMcCandles

        Welcome to the dark side

      • Rowdy Yates

Yep he was due to K for the 3rd time in 3 ABs tonight.

      • grumpyderfsmagic8ball

        IKF

  • JacobMcCandles

TX set their all time record for SOs last yr….and they will eclipse that this yr…..Morton’s career best tonight.

Pro lucky there on taking second

    • WhoKnowscs

Worth the risk with Odor after him.

      • JacobMcCandles

        Need runners not risk

  • dearmidol

Please please please pitch count Morton.

  • dearmidol

Odor has struck out just three times tonight. That’s very encouraging to all the Odor haters.

  • dearmidol

This low scoring game seems more like inept offense than yesterday’s did.

    • JacobMcCandles

Kind of ironic…not u but a lot of people were complaining about high scoring and “juiced balls” now everyone doesn’t like low scoring games……lol

      • Gregor_S

Don’t think many were complaining that there was too much scoring, just that most of the scoring was on HRs which was getting boring and isn’t really baseball.

        • JacobMcCandles

Well not so much, but no biggie

  • dearmidol

A winnable game now if it’s a bullpen game.

  • WhoKnowscs

NEWS ALERT! Mendoza is suing MLB to get his good name back. He’s demanding the Mendoza line be erased and replaced with the Odor line set at .175.

    • Rowdy Yates

      POD!

    • dearmidol

The Odor line. I like that.

      • Rowdy Yates

The Mendoza Line’s bad but the the Odor Line stinks.

        • GoRangers23

          Ha!

        • WhoKnowscs

Mendoza line ain’t so bad anymore since about a third of the hitters in the league seem to be below it.

    • WhoKnowscs

Of qualified hitters(enough ABs to rank), only 7 are hitting at or below the Odor Line. Lewis Brinson is the only one exactly at it The rest are below. Chris Davis is barely above it(.176).

  • dearmidol

Thank you, baseball god for Will Harris.

  • dearmidol

    16 Ks so far.

    • WhoKnowscs

Choo, Gallo and Odor combine for 9.

      • GoRangers23

I wish Gallo would start hitting again! Choo too!

        • dearmidol

This is what Gallo is. He will lead the league in home runs and strikeouts and bat .200.

          • GoRangers23

He went through a time when he was getting singles and walking also, with a double or two thrown in, but now there is nothing at all, which is not good. It’s been too long since he got a hit.

          • Gregor_S

Keep hoping he won’t turn into Chris Davis but it seems he will. Odd that his hitting more to LF hasn’t made much difference.

Too early to give up hope though. Aaron Judge apparently hit like Gallo his first year.

          • dearmidol

We can win with Gallo. But we can’t have two or three or four Gallos.

          • Tony Howell

Now that is a 100% true statement

          • GoRangers23

It’s way too early to give up on Gallo, in my opinion. He was doing really well there for a while.

          • isittime

He’s a more athletic Adam Dunn.

  • WhoKnowscs

If the game wasn’t over before(it was though) it is now.

  • dearmidol

    Well that was that.

  • GoRangers23

What inning did Banister replace Fister in?

    • dearmidol

He went 7, so this inning.

      • GoRangers23

        Ok, thanks!

    • WhoKnowscs

he gave up a runner in the 8th.

  • JacobMcCandles

Guess Banny lost his spiral again….Correa 5 for 6…2 Hrs agst Barnette

  • dearmidol

Mendez has been up for a week. Finally got in a game.

    • WhoKnowscs

Doesn’t belong on the roster. not because of skill or not . . . but because Banny wouldn’t use him for anything but mop up duty.

    • JacobMcCandles

Saw him pulling bench splinters out of his arse

  • dearmidol

    Thank you ump.

  • JacobMcCandles

This Ump is getting an education tonight

  • GoRangers23

If I could manage to reach through the tv, that guy that is making all those HOOOOOOOOOOOO noises would be in trouble!! 😡😡😡

    • GoRangers23

I have thoroughly perfected the evil, irritated Mom stare!

      • FlappingGums

        Ha!! 😁

    • WhoKnowscs

If I could reach through the tv I would have tripped Banny when he was shlubbing out to take out Fister.

      • GoRangers23

Ha! He would have already been well acquainted with the stare by now!

    • FlappingGums

      Isn’t that annoying?

      • GoRangers23

YES! Sometimes that stuff doesn’t annoy me too badly, but at other times, it about drives me up a wall.

  • WhoKnowscs

I need to make an animated .gif from “Oh Brother where Art Thou” where the guy is being carried out on a rail. But need to photoshop the head with Banny’s or JD’s.

    • dearmidol

      Great movie.

  • WhoKnowscs

Lets put some runs on the board so they have to bring in Giles.

  • WhoKnowscs

    Well . . . it wasn’t a K.

  • GoRangers23

The Mother’s Day game tomorrow is Matt Moore against Dallas Keuchel. That makes me sad.

    • FlappingGums

I was hoping it’d be Bartolo Colon tomorrow.

      • WhoKnowscs

        Wednesday.

        • FlappingGums

          Okay, thank you! 😀

  • GoRangers23

Tomorrow’s game is super early at 1:10.

  • isittime

    What’d I miss?

    • GoRangers23

I had too much going on while the game was on to watch all of it. I was listening to most of it. They hit Mazara in the legs with a ball that was aimed directly at him and had no curve. I guess he’s alright. Other than that, I don’t think anything great happened. I don’t remember any outstanding plays that were better than normal. We only got one run, so that about tells it all.

      • FlappingGums

To add to what Go said, Guzman hit a HR.

        • GoRangers23

Oh yeah! Thanks Flap! I forgot about that.

        • GoRangers23

Isn’t it funny that every single game that we faced being shut out, someone has hit a solo homerun. 😄

  • JacobMcCandles

Sstros now have the top 3 pitchers in ERA in the AL

    • isittime

I almost afraid to see where the rangers team era is at. Moore and Perez nuked it.

      • WhoKnowscs

        4.84 . . . Somewhere around 26th.

  • FlappingGums

I’m going to watch at least some of the Reds – Dodgers game & call it a night.

  • elkaba

Had an early Mother’s Day dinner out with one bunch of fam tonight. Sounds like we struck out tonight against the Stros. Too bad. Thought we had some momentum coming off last night’s win. Oh well, I guess Fister is no Hamels. Maybe tomorrow.
