Foscue reclaims record.

Congratulation are in order. After going 0-for-3 in last night’s 6-0 loss against Baltimore, Justin Foscue has just reclaimed the Texas Rangers franchise record for consecutive at-bats without a base hit. There was no fanfare. Nobody kept the baseball for his mantle. That’s because it’s just the franchise record, not the all-time major league record.

Foscue set the franchise record last year by ending the season 0-for-39. But it didn’t take long for that to be shattered by a member of the Hitless Idiots of the 2025 Texas Rangers.

Earlier this season, Joc Pederson (remember him) strung together a futility streak of 0-for-41. It was a record nobody thought would be broken for a long time. Turns out, it was just two months. Exactly.

Pederson ended his 0-for-41 on April 23. Last night, on June 23, Justin Foscue ran his consecutive hitless streak to forty-two at-bats. And counting. His 0-for-42 is just twelve away from Baltimore’s Chris Davis, a former Ranger, who ran the streak of ineptness up to fifty-four consecutive hitless at-bats in 2018 and 2019.

Foscue’s next target is 45, shared by three hitters. Current Cubs manager and former Brewers infielder Craig Counsell went 0-for-45 in 2011. In 1973, infielder Dave Campbell spread the wealth among three teams, starting his 0-for-45 with San Diego, getting traded to Saint Louis and going hitless there, then getting shipped to Houston, where finally got a hit. And back in 1909, Brooklyn catcher Bill Bergen put up his 0-for-45. That was in the Deadball Era, and he certainly made the most of it. Or least of it, depending on how one looks at it.

In 2010, San Francisco infielder Eugenio Valez started a hitless streak to end the season, was traded to the Dodgers in the offseason, and continued his ineptness the next year with LA, running his hitless total to 0-for-46.

Foscue might not get much playing time. But he should join the 45 Club in his next start, assuming he gets three at-bats.

With the Rangers offense, there is little to celebrate. At least Justin Foscue gives us something.
