Bad luck hitting early.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way in spring when it doesn’t matter as much. First Corey Seager will miss the spring training and the exhibition season because of hernia surgery.

Now, Josh Jung, who is injured once a season, has a calf strain that is going to keep him out two to three weeks.

If there’s one thing we know, sports injury weeks like estimated miles per gallon. They are not real. Three weeks is usually five. The good thing is, the Rangers do have depth on the offensive side to sustain injuries, unlike what will happen when injuries hit their rotation.

Josh Smith and Ezekiel Duran will get more spring at-bats than they had hoped. They also have shortstop Jonathan Ornelas on the forty-man roster. Non-roster veteran Matt Duffy is also in camp.

At least the early spring games are played with mostly prospects and veterans trying to hang on, and the regulars take few at-bats anyway.

The first game is this Friday. Let’s hope the Rangers don’t even notice that Josh Jung was out. Because, when he went down during the season in 2023 is when the Rangers started their long slide.
