So, are they going to do this or are they going to stomp on our collective hearts?
Texas came out of the break looking unbeatable. Literally. They’re 2-0, having given up just one run to the best team in baseball. And having had just enough offense. They are now, finally, above .500.
Is Rowdy Tellez their trade deadline acquisition? He certainly made an impact in his second game with the Rangers, hitting a three-run homer that would be the difference in a 4-1 game.
They’ve needed a bat all season. They picked up Tellez off the scrap heap. One man’s DFA is another man’s treasure. While Tellez’z numbers won’t get him in the same area code as Cooperstown, he’s an upgrade over Jake Burger, so the Rangers did, theoretically, improve there. Maybe that’s all this front office will be allowed to do with the offense, seeing as how they are budget constrained.
Eventually Joc Pederson is coming back from injury. That phrase used to be met with anticipation. But not too many struggling offenses are awaiting the return of a .131 hitter with an OPS+ of 50.
And if they don’t add a bat, if they think Rowdy Tellez is the golden ticket, let’s hope they find that back end closer they’ve went into the season without.
All of these questions begs the ultimate question: are they going to actually make a legitimate run at these playoffs, or are they going to stomp on our collective hearts?
Oh, before you answer that, realize Nathan Eovaldi has been scratched from his start today. And the Rangers are facing last year’s Cy Young winner, who’s pitching Cy Youngish this year as well.
