Spring Breakout game.

MLB is trying a new thing this preseason called Spring Breakout. It’s like the Futures Game but concentrated to an organization’s best players, where the Futures games is league versus league.

According to MLB.com, each team will put together a roster of its best prospects to play a seven-inning game against the prospects of another organization, followed by a regular spring training game against the state two teams.

This year, the Rangers play the Reds on March 14, at Surprise Stadium, at 3:05, in the Spring Breakout Game.

“What you’re seeing is a glimpse of the future,” said Rangers assistant general manager for player development Ross Fenstermaker. “If the Cincinnati Reds and the Rangers face off in the World Series, you’re seeing a potential matchup now that you might see two or three years in the future.

I grew up a fan of the Reds in the Big Red Machine era of Bench, Perez, Rose, Morgan, Concepcion, Griffey, and Foster. I was a die-hard Reds fan until I moved to Dallas in 1994, the same time the Reds stopped trying to compete and the Rangers moved into the Ballpark and started trying to be good.

Since then, both teams have mostly been disappointing, with the Rangers having a bit of success in the early 2010s, and then, of course, last year. The Reds have mostly acted like a small-market team that cannot compete, and haven’t.

The idea of them facing off in a World Series is unimaginable. But, if they did, for me it would be weird. I am fully emotionally invested in the Rangers just like I used to be in the Reds. If that happened, I would certainly want the Rangers to win but would be find if they didn’t.

But, the odds of a Rangers-Reds World Series are just slightly better than my winning $300 million in a Powerball lottery. Although, would certainly want that to happen.

Anyway, the Spring Breakout is another way to gin up excitement in spring when the games are starting to be monotonous and fans and players are just ready for the season to start.
