The division nobody wants to win.

Josh Smith, who has suddenly been platooned, ties the game at 4-4 with a 2-run single in the 5th.

The most disappointing aspect of the Rangers inability to win games is that they have been unable to gain ground in the American League West.

Nobody wants to win the division.

The Houston Astros are 8-11 in August. They just suffered a five-game stretch where they were shutout in four of those games, three consecutive.

Seattle has now lost five games in a row, and six of their last seven.

And the Rangers won six straight to storm back into contention. Except, that last part didn’t happen. The Rangers had a prime opportunity to make up serious ground, and didn’t do it. All they’ve done is come off a road trip in which they went 2-5—losing three of four in a vital series to Kansas City, including 6-4 yesterday—to drop their August record to 6-13 record, losing eleven of their last fourteen.

The Los Angeles Angels have a losing August record as well, at 8-10, but not as losing as Texas. The Angels are now just a game out of third and posed to pass the Rangers in the West. The only team in the division that’s winning is Sacramento. They’re 11-7 this month.

The Rangers couldn’t hit when they got brilliant pitching. Now they can’t win when nobody else in their division ahead of them can.

They’ve squandered every golden opportunity they’ve had.
