40-man: Aramis Garcia.

A continuing look at the Rangers 40-man roster.

ARAMIS GARCIA
Age: 27
Right-Handed Hitting Catcher

With four catchers on their 40-man roster (and two Garcias), the Rangers seem to have finally moved on from Jeff Mathis. Don’t lose hope though, Rangers fans, there’s still time to sign the free-agent catcher.

The Rangers claimed Garcia on waivers from the Giant about ten days ago. Garcia was the Giants second-round pick in the 2014 draft, and played in parts of two seasons. He was slated to be the Giants backup catcher for 2020 but tore the labrum in his hip and missed the entire season.

He is regarded as a better-than-average defensive catcher with raw power, meaning he is certainly a huge upgrade on both sides of the plate over Mathis.

He has a good chance to be the Rangers backup catcher in 2021. Or, he could just as easily be released. Or he could hang around long enough for Sam Huff to be ready, then be released.

If you’re a betting man or woman, bet on him starting the season on the opening day roster as the number two catcher.
