40-man: Tyler Phillips.

A continuing look at the Rangers 40-man roster.

TYLER PHILLIPS
Age: 23
Right-Handed Pitcher

The Rangers picked the 6-foot 5-inch Phillips in the sixteenth round of the 2015 draft out of high school in New Jersey.

In five minor-league seasons he’s been used almost exclusively as a starter, winning 30 games, losing 28, and posting an impressive 3.86 ERA. He was a victim of not having minor league baseball in 2020, which put an abrupt halt to his development.

His fastball doesn’t blow you away. But he also doesn’t give the game away, averaging just 1.71 walks per nine innings, mostly on the strength of a killer changeup.

He still has some developing to do but might be a dark horse to make the major league roster in 2021. He has certainly impressed every step of the way.

Phillips will really benefit from the minor leagues being played this year.
