A memorable day for Swihart.

Who cares if it’s a meaningless game in Feburary or the middle of a pennant race? A home run in the bottom of the ninth to win a game is perhaps the most fun you can have at a baseball game. And a huge thrill for the player who hit it

Blake Swihart is battling for the backup catcher roster spot with Jose Trevino and Jeff Mathis. It’s too bad for Swihart that the Rangers have already committed three million to Mathis for 2020.

Swihart hasn’t exactly torn the cover off the ball in his five major league seasons, though. In fact, in 2019 he hit .163 with both Boston and Arizona. His OPS+ was 35. The only catcher worst than Swihart offensively was Jeff Mathis.

But, still, Swihart hit a game winning home run in the bottom of the ninth to win yesterday’s game. He’ll remember that forever. Mainly because’s had only twelve home runs in his entire major league career, over nearly 700 plate appearances.

Good luck to Blake Swihart as he battles Jeff Mathis for the backup catcher role.

It’s like the clash of the titans. Only the opposite.
