One week left. Thank goodness. Spring training is like Mississippi. No matter how much fun it’s going to be at the beach, you still have to drive through Mississippi to get to Florida.

There are four practice games in Surprise, an off day Thursday. Then two practice games at the Ballpark on Friday and Saturday.

Then the season starts next Sunday for many teams. The Rangers are off Sunday and open their season Monday, a week from tomorrow.

Here are the batting averages for players that are expected to carry this team to the promised land, and some players that are hoping to.

Lucroy .417
Gomez .344
Rua .327
Mazara .289
Napoli .286
DeShields .265
Andrus .250
Odor .227
Chirinos .200
Choo .194
Profar .083
Beltre .000

And here are the ERAs of the pitchers competing for a starting slot:

Hamels 10.38
Martinez 8.66
Griffin 6.48
Gee 4.61
Hauschild 3.12
Darvish 2.84
Perez 2.79
Gamboa 2.12

The Rangers are 12-16, for a winning percentage of .429. The Cubs and Blue Jays are worse than that. The Cubs, as you might recall reading in a history book, won the World Series last year. The Blue Jays went to the AL Championship Series.

Proof that spring training stats don’t matter.

Let’s get our butts out of Mississippi.
