Derek Holland just pitched himself off the playoff roster.
He certainly won’t be one of the top four starters. And if he is not a starter, he certainly has no role in the bullpen.
There is no place on the playoff roster for Holland.
And that’s a shame because he is the author of the best post-season start in Rangers history when he threw eight-and-one-third shutout innings at the Cardinals in Game Four after St. Louis pounded the Rangers a day earlier for sixteen runs.
But freak injuries and unfortunate inconsistencies have put him in a position where he really has no value to the Rangers.
He dropped to 7-9 and saw his ERA tick up north of 5.00 with five spotty innings last night, punctuated by a Mike Trout dagger-in-the-heart three-run homer in the top of the fifth.
And with that, he gets October off. All expenses paid.
