Yawn.

It’s been a slow, boring offseason. Not much to report or talk about.. And yesterday that trend contented when the Rangers announced they signed Tyler Mahle to a two-year deal.

A sore-armed, broken down pitcher? Is Jon Daniels back?

Okay, it’s not that bad. But this one is somewhat of a yawner. Mahle is recovering from Tommy John surgery and probably won’t be ready until mid-season. The twenty-nine-year-old righty was on his way to being a decent starter with the Reds. In parts of six seasons, he went 31-38 with a .446 ERA, but had pretty seasons in ’20 and ’21, with ERAs of 3.59 and 3.75. When the Reds traded him to the Twins at the trade deadline of 2022, his ERA had ballooned to 4.40, though. He made a couple starts with Minnesota, landed on the I.L. with shoulder inflammation, came back for one start, then went on the I.L again for the rest of the season.

In 2023, he looked like he had rebounded to his good self. After five starts his ERA was 3.16. Then, he went on the I.L. again, this time for Tommy John surgery. So, basically, the Twins got him for nine starts.

Now, he’s a Ranger. They signed him to a two-year deal. He’ll make $5.5 million in 2024, and 16.5 in 2025, with incentives to make more.

Mahle isn’t an Eovaldi or a Scherzer. He’s just a good, solid, number three or four starter in a rotation. Whenever he gets back.

Wake me up when something big happens.
