First base options. 47 comments

There was some talk on MLB Network Radio yesterday about who would end up at first base/DH for the Rangers.

The general consensus was Mark Trumbo.

But one under-the-radar name is probably now on Jon Daniels’s radar. His team released him a couple of days ago. In 2015 he hit 22 home runs and drove in 86. The year before he hit 14 and drove in 80. Now, after being cut by the Twins, due to a down year mostly due to injury, Trevor Plouffe is a free agent, and seemingly the perfect Daniels signing.

The right-handed-hitting Plouffe played in only 84 games last season but still managed to hit 12 home runs and drive in 47, while batting .260.

He mostly played the corner infield in his time with the Twins, but also logging in some innings at short and right field. The Twins had better options at his position, and they are budget strapped, so he was expendable.

He may not be the answer. But I would be willing to bet a lot of people in the Rangers front office are asking questions about him.

He might just be a steal. Or a bust.
